Quick hit
Want your iPhone to buzz instead of ring? This is the simple, no-nonsense way to put it on vibrate — and make sure it actually vibrates when you expect it to.
Step 1 — Use the side switch (fastest)
- Flip the Ring/Silent switch on the left side of your iPhone down toward the back of the phone. You’ll see an orange line when it’s in Silent mode.
- That puts sounds into silent, but whether it vibrates depends on the settings in the next step.
- If your phone doesn’t have a side switch (some newer models use an Action Button), press/configure that button or use Control Center instead.
Step 2 — Make sure vibrate is on
- Open Settings → Sounds & Haptics (or Sounds on older iOS).
- Turn on Vibrate on Silent (and optionally Vibrate on Ring if you want buzz + ring).
- If those are off, your phone will be totally quiet even when the side switch is set to silent.
Step 3 — Quick toggle via Control Center
- Swipe down from the top-right corner (or up from the bottom on older iPhones) to open Control Center.
- If you want a quick way to silence notifications without the switch, enable a Focus like Do Not Disturb — tap it to activate.
- Remember: Focus can be configured to still allow vibrations from specific people or apps.
Step 4 — Customize vibration pattern (so you recognize buzzes)
- Go to Settings → Sounds & Haptics → pick a sound type (like Ringtone or Text Tone), then tap Vibration.
- Choose a built-in pattern or create a new one so you can tell who’s contacting you by feel.
Step 5 — Test it
- Flip the switch to silent, or enable your chosen Focus, then have someone call or text you to confirm the phone vibrates.
- If it doesn’t, double-check Vibrate on Silent and that volume isn’t locked in some weird state (ringer volume is separate from media volume).
Pro Tip
- Use Emergency Bypass on important contacts (open the contact → Edit → Ringtone/Text Tone → turn on Emergency Bypass) so those calls or texts vibrate or sound even if your phone is on silent or a Focus is active.
Warning
- Alarms set in the Clock app will still sound even if your phone is on silent — don’t rely on vibrate-only alarms for important wake-ups unless you test them first.
- Also, emergency alerts can override silent settings — that’s by design.
Common mistake people make
- They flip the side switch and assume vibration is automatic. If Vibrate on Silent is off, the phone won’t buzz — it’ll be completely quiet. Always check the setting after flipping the switch.
